The .srt subtitle is a small sized plain text that can be joined in a video container. There are many reasons why people want to extract DVD subtitles, for example, you may want to add a foreign language to the backup of your DVD.
DVD subtitle track is contained within the VOB files of the DVD. This article is about how to rip subtitles of a DVD movie with the free DVD subtitle ripper SubRip, a nice free software that allows you to convert DVD discs imagemap subtitles into .srt text subtitles for other use in a simple way.
Before we start, please make sure that you have ripped your DVD to your hard drive with a DVD converter software and have installed SubRip.
Launch SubRip and click "VOB" on the toolbar in the main window. Then you will see a window like below pop up to allows you choose some VOB files.
Now click Open IFO and load the first .IFO file of your DVD, presumably VTS_01_0.IFO. After loading it, check the filenames to make sure all is right. And generally speaking, there will be 4 or more VOB files with the big size displayed on the right of each clip. Select all of them except the first one like the picture shows. On the top left, you can choose the language stream to rip.
On the right part of the Window, please make sure Characters matrix file is set as New File and "SubPictures to Text via OCR" is selected under Actions.
After all the settings in Step 1, you can just hit "Start" on the bottom to start the DVD subtitle ripping process. Then you will see a window showing a line of text and the first character is within a red box. What you need to do is to check the character in the image. You can enter the character on the below box and click "OK" to get the next character recognition. The characters you have already recognized will be skipped, which help you save some time. When doing the check, be careful and enter the right character, otherwise, you can get the .srt subtitles with lots of errors.
When you finished the character recognition, you can either save it to .srt file or make some modifications since like change the framerate, split the subtitles into two, etc. Finally, click the save button on the tool bar and you have extracted subtitles from DVD and save it as .srt subtitles.
Tips: Before you close SubRip, you can save the Characters Matrix by choosing Characters Matrix > Save Characters Matrix File As to holds all OCR information manually inputted before. By doing this, you can save much time by not starting the recognition process all over again for a new DVD subtitle ripping, instead, you just need to enter any extra characters SubRip can't understand.
