What is MP4

MP4, the abbreviated version of MPEG-4 Part 14, is a multimedia container format that is used as the standard for a series of audio and video coding formats. It is also referred to as MPEG-4/H.264 (Advanced Video Coding). Aside from storing digital audio and video streams, MP4 can store other types of data such as subtitles and images. Furthermore, it has advanced content such as menus, user interactivity, 3D graphics and more.

Note that MP4 video format uses different methods to compress audio and video tracks. Video tracks are compressed with either H.264 or MPEG-4 codec, while AAC codec compresses the audio tracks. MPEG-4 is divided into many parts, with the key ones being MPEG-4 part 10 and MPEG-4 part 2.
