DRM M4V Removal - How to Remove DRM from iTunes M4V Video

When you purchase a video in iTunes, it's usually in M4V format. The thing about M4V videos from iTunes is, that they're always DRM-protected. That means you can't transfer the M4V videos to non-Apple devices. If you want to play the videos on other players like Archos, Zen, etc., you need to remove iTunes DRM from M4V and convert iTunes M4V to other video formats like WMV, MP4, AVI, etc. so that you can enjoy those iTunes M4V videos without any limitation.

We are so sorry but currently there is no good solution. Would you please ask for a refund?
  • unsatisfied_user  2012-03-16 16:05
well, it looks like i got excited and spoke too soon.  Unfortunately, the first couple minutes of the file converted seamlessly, however when i tried to watch the whole file it turns out after those first few minutes the file becomes very choppy just like before.  I was using half original capture size by the way.
  • Aimersoft Employee  2012-03-16 01:01
Glad to hear that. Have a nice day!

I would like to amend my comments.  After much screwing around, and no help from the support staff at Aimersoft, my solution turned out to be setting the video bit rate to match the source exactly (4000kb/s), setting the resolution to match exactly (720p), setting the framerate to 24 rather than 29, and setting the output format to match exactly (.mp4), and then setting the audio bitrate to variable.  I think the two most important variable that led to my success were the framerate and the audio bitrate.  This combination worked for me in itunes to preserve the quality nearly perfectly. There was some quality degredation, but it wasn't terrible, it was hardly noticable actually, and i cleaned it up in another video editing program.

Hello, we are really very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. For your case when converting iTunes M4V files, would you please set the Capture Size as "Half of original" and try again? (Options > Processing > Capture size). If it still works so badly, we are afraid we can only give you the refund. The software has some bugs and currently they haven't been solved yet. In later upgrades, we will make the software more stable and offer a better user experience. Thank you for your understanding.

The software works in that it outputs a video file that is free of DRM, after fiddling around ALOT.  However, the video that it produces is nowhere near the quality of the original video.  I have tried different resolutions, bitrates, file formats... i have tried matching the original file as closely as i can... i have tried it in all logical configurations, as well as some not so logical configurations, and the results are always very low quality.  The video and audio tracks do not match up, sometimes the video plays very fast, while other times the audio plays very slow and then speeds up.  sometimes it's just consistently off the entire movie but playing at the correct speed.  Also, the video quality itself has never been good, I haven't had one conversion yet that was free from artifacts, jumpiness, random freezing, etc.  My hardware is not the issue, I am running a quad core processor, 8gb ram, 2gb video card etc etc etc it's a fast computer.

Hello, GoHack, sorry for the inconvenices caused to you. Generally speaking, when the virtual card is well installed, the Error message will not pop up. If it still doesn't work, please contact our Support Team with the log file so that we can figure out a solution to help you. Thank you for your understanding.
  • Gohack  2012-03-12 04:47
Did that, and driver works fine w/some movies, while w/others, it doesn't, when it comes to the sound. Now, after doing a few movies, I'm suddenly getting, under Conversion Process, "Virtual driver not installed". Talk about finicky software.

Hi, thank you for using Aimersoft products. Actually, Aimersoft DRM Media Converter is recording the video/audio to help you get rid of the DRM-ed files. So the conversion may take a lot of time if your file last for a long time. For the sound problem, would you please click "Options" > "Processing" > "Driver Check" to troubleshoot the virtual sound card? Have a nice day!
  • GoHack  2012-03-11 00:12
While the program seems to work, but it is VERY VERY slow, even w/the very latest hardware (a multi-core cpu and the latest Nvidia graphics card). Then there the problem of the sound not always working for some reason after the conversion.

Hello, we are really very sorry for the inconveniences caused to you. Generally speaking, the iTunes player error is caused by the failure to activate iTunes. First, please change the playback preferences of iTunes for video to play in a separate window: run iTunes and click Edit > Playback and select in a separate window for Play Movies and TV shows and Play music videos.   Secondly, please make sure the file play well on iTunes. If not, please update iTunes to the latest version. When the file play well on iTunes, reinstall Aimersoft DRM Media Converter and try again. If it still doesn’t work, please contact out support team with the log file (located at the setup folder) so that we can find out the reasons for the failure and put forward a solution. Thank you for your understanding and our best wishes to you!

Hi, for your case, would you please reinstall iTunes and try again? Usually, after the reinstallation, all will be fine.

when I want to convert protected iTunes M4V, your media converter (trial version) tries and comes up with "iTunes not installed" - which is wrong of course. I have iTunes 10.5.3.3.
  • Aimersoft Employee  2012-02-17 07:05
Hi, after the conversion, please click "Find Target" to locate the converted video files to see whether the conversion is successful. If you have installed iTunes well and our software still doesn’t work when converting iTunes M4V, would you please send us the conversion log so that we can help you figure out what’s going wrong and find the way to fix the problem? Thank you and best wishes! Aimersoft Studio

Yeeea...I have itunes installed.  That's where I bought the episodes at.  I have tried several different types of movies to convert to like HD AVI, regular avi,..everything.. and they show the progres moviing through 1%-100%, and then it still will not work.
  • Aimersoft Employee  2012-02-16 05:40
Thank you for using Aimersoft product. When removing DRM protection from iTunes M4V, the M4V files cannot be previewed in this software as videos in other formats. And iTunes need to be open for successful recording. So we recommend you install iTunes first to fix this issue. Best wishes!
  • Staceg07  2012-02-16 02:38
I have a DRM bubble guppies tv show in itunes and just downloaded this program.  it wont even "preview" it like it shows in the video to do at :37  seconds.  Why is it doing that?  When I do click "start" it wont work and keeps opening up itunes and then telling me that it cant play protected m4v files and tells me i dont have itunes installed...

....Ho Ho !   Now i got sound (after three hours of converting time) but the image does not mach the sound... (the sound is about 3 seconds late compared to the picture).
  • Your customer  2012-01-01 20:09
I have been trying to convert a movie purchased from itunes to AVI for the past three days... Best I got after several tries was a movie without sound... What a disappointment... Moreover, whats all about this message to open itunes and start playing the movie in a separate window? (tried that also...)
  • Employee  2011-12-31 06:13
Hi, in this occasion, please make sure the output format you selected is a video format instead of an audio format. And also the video files should be able to play in iTunes.
  • Guest  2011-12-29 12:21
do you have to be able to play it to strip off the drm?
  • Employee  2011-12-29 01:18
Not for the next episode? Do you mean it is stuck? For this occasion, please restart the program and try again. If it still doesn't work, it may be because the source files are not supported. Anyway, whenever you come across a problem when using our products, you can contact our support team for help. Have a nice day!
  • Beanss23  2011-12-28 18:42
why did it work once and then not for the next episode?
  • Jakeb1997  2011-12-28 12:20
    Pretty much yeah.
  • Miranda  2011-12-28 06:00
Do you mean when converting the DRM-ed video files, the software takes it for granted that the video files are music files and you get the output file without picture?
  • Miranda  2011-12-28 05:59
    That's safe. Haha
  • Jakeb1997  2011-12-27 19:59
AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Your dumb program thinks that its a music file!!!!
