How to Convert Analog Video to DVD

What is analog video?

Generally speaking, all magnetic video tapes that are not digital can be defined as analog videos. It includes VHS, Betacam, Betamax, U-Matic, film reels and other tapes.

There're three analog formats in the world: PAL, NTSC and SECAM. Those analog video tapes will decay with time. To save your analog video for a long time, DVD is the best solution, because that DVD can last up to 300 years if chosen properly. Following are the step-by-step tutorial on how to transfer analog video to DVD.

What we need:
Video capture card or TV card: Pinnaclesys or Canopus.
Blank discs: DVD+RW, DVD-RW or DVD-RAW, DVD+RAW.
Disc Burner: Adaptec DirectCD 3.0 or Easy CD Creator 4.02
DVD Burning Software: Here I recommend DVD Creator. It's Good DVD Creator software that can convert analog Video to DVD with high quality. Fully compatible with Windows 7 (DVD Creator MAC version is also available).

Convert analog video to digital video and transfer to computer

  • 1. Install video capture card in PCI of your PC then reboot your PC and complete the rest steps following instructions of pop-up windows
  • 2. Install capture software. Most video capture cards have a built-in capture device. Install recommended software as much as possible.
  • 3. Connect your camcorder and open camcorder
  • 4. Run capture software
  • 5. Click Start to record your video and select what video format you want to save.
  • 6. A while, your analog video tapes will be transferred to computer as digital video.

Convert analog video to DVD

After you transferred analog video to computer, you can start to convert analog video to DVD as follows:

1 Download DVD Creator, install and run it.

Note that the below quick start guide uses DVD Creator for Windows screenshots.

Click "Import" or File on menu bar to load these converted analog video files to the program, you need to check the video size on the measure bar on the bottom. Make sure the space doesn't exceed the total DVD capacity.

2 DVD Menu Maker

Click "Menu Template" to customize your DVD menu. There are different styles of built-in templates, frames and buttons for your choice. To apply a template, frame or button, you can just double click it. You can even add text, background music and background image to customize the menu.

3 Convert analog movie to DVD

Once you have previewed your video and nothing wrong about it, you can go to set TV Standard (PAL/NTSC) on "Setting" option, output Aspect Ratio (4:3/16:9) on "DVD setting bar" and output Video Quality "Low video quality, High video quality and Highest video quality". the highest video quality option is best for high DVD Video quality, even though it will take longer authoring time and occupy more capacity of DVD disc.

And then Click "Burn" and select your DVD drive(if you have multiple DVD drive on Computer) and other DVD parameters, after that, hit "Start" to convert and burn Analog Video to DVD Disc, DVD Folder or ISO Files.

Now all analog video tapes have been copied to DVD and you can enjoy them on your DVD player or TV with large screen or backup!
